The University in our city is the oldest in Poland and one of the oldest in the Central Europe. The first <em>studium generale <\/em>(which means \u2018university\u2019 in medieval Latin) was founded in 1364 by king <strong>Kasimir the Great<\/strong>, but unfortunately declined after his death. Renewal of the university was made in 1400 by king W\u0142adys\u0142aw, the first Polish monarch from the Jagiellonian dynasty (hence the present name of the academy \u2013 <strong>Jagiellonian University<\/strong>).
